Jan Gwatkin

Jan is currently engaged in doctoral research at UWA investigating Training and Accreditation for Australian Studio Piano Teachers and completing her Certificate IV in Training and Assessment, whilst endeavouring to maintain her performance and accompanying. She also holds Teacher Training status for Australian National Council of Orff -Schulwerk (ANCOS), Suzuki Talent Education Association of Australia STEAA(WA), and the West Australian College of Teaching. She has been a guest lecturer at University of Western Australia and private associations delivering courses in piano pedagogy performance, Orff Schulwerk, and Suzuki methodology. Jan was the inaugural recipient of the Humphrey Parker Davies Scholarship (2004) from ANCOS and investigated Orff Schulwerk and the Piano in Salzburg and Munich. She is also currently investigating accreditation issues for both the association and its courses within the AQF. She gained a Teaching and Learning scholarship from University of Western Australia 2006 and presented her findings at the Teaching and Learning Forum, 2007.

Jan has written several articles and demonstrate her knowledge of current music education and piano pedagogy practices worldwide including several ISME conferences and the World Piano Pedagogy Conference (2004) Las Vegas.

During and since her Bachelor Degree Jan regularly has performed and accompanied at many city venues in Perth and the University of Western Australia. This culminated in being chosen to perform with a 100 voice choir and full university orchestra for a celebration of Sir. Frank Calloway to a capacity audience of 1000+. She uses her wide knowledge of repertoire and performance techniques to benefit her students who gain high marks in performance examinations and local festivals.

Jan has a successful private studio practice in Darlington, WA, has taught at several primary schools in WA, guest lectured at University of Western Australia, and is a mother of 2 sons aged 17 and 15. She offers a professional service to both students and teachers in a friendly, imaginative and happy environment (January, 2007).
